An Introduction Of Dr. WangbingzhangWorking Committee For Wang Bingzhang's FreedomDr. Wang was born on Decemeber 30, 1947, in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. He graduated from Beijing Medical University and served as a resident in a hospital for 8 years. After establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the United States, in 1979 Dr. Wang was among the first group of students sponsored by the Chinese Communist government to study abroad in Western countries. Dr. Wang was among the initial few students who had completed their studies. He earned a Ph.D. degree in pathology from McGill University in Canada. His accomplishment then was highly commended by Chinese official news media and by some overseas press media sympathetic to the Chinese Communist regime.Despite this praise, Dr. Wang chose the course of "rebellion" and involved himself in movements dedicated to achieving democracy in China rather than practicing medicine. Dr. Wang wanted to rekindle the nascent flame of Chinese democratic aspirations as demonstrated in wall posters which had been supressed by the Communist regime in 1979.At a New York news conference in November 1979, Dr. Wang and like-minded fellow students and friends announced the formation of China Spring democracy movement dedicated to end one-party dictatorship in China. His group also founded a magazine "China Spring", the first overseas publication by Chinese students to promote the democratization process and press freedom that had been absent for several decades since under the Chinese Communist rule. The group sent representatives to the PRC embassy in Washington D.C. and to Hong Kong and Taiwan to apply for permits to publish "China Spring". Despite the success to obtain permits in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the Chinese Communist government refused to issue a permit, even in the midst of a great deal of international interest and publicity. In December 1983, Dr. Wang convened the first world congress of the China Spring Movement. Delegates from many parts of the world attended the congress. The meeting gave birth to Chinese Alliance for Democracy(CAD) which was the first overseas organization dedicated to promote democracy in China. Dr. Wang was elected the first CAD president. He then devoted a great deal of efforts to developing it into an international alliance to push the Chinese Communists to democratize. Under Dr. Wang's leadership, CAD organized or initiated many events to oppose the Communist regime's illegitimate rule. Especially "Declaration of Thirty Persons" signed by thirty prominent Chinese intellectuals and celebrities still living in China then. Around the turn of 1989, Dr. Wang courageously attempted once to return to Beijing, but was turned back in Tokyo. Although his trial was not successful, his action inspired many students who showed their courage and bravery during the June 4th Tiananmen demostration later in 1989. In 1998 Dr. Wang succeeded in returning to China and traveled throughout the country secretly to promote establishing the first opposition party, the Chinese Democratic Party. Though he was expelled by the Communist authority eventually, his 1998 and 1999 efforts generated tremendous interest in ending one-party rule, and facilitated the formation of provisional committees of the Chinese Democratic Party in 26 provinces. Dr. Wang's efforts did not escape the notice of the Communist regime which became very concerned about his activities and movements. In June 2202, while attempting to meet with several people from China in the city of Mong Cai in northern Vietnam, Dr. Wang was kidnapped by Chinese Communist agents disguised as "bandits" and taken to China. After being secretly detained for eight months, Dr. Wang was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Chinese Communist court in February 2003. Dr. Wang's kidnapping and secret detention was the first instance of the Chinese Communist's official terrorism practiced outside the Chinese borders against individuals promoting democracy in China. In the many decades of the Chinese Communist regime's anti-democracy activities, Dr. Wang's sentence represents the most severe retribution imposed on anyone engaging in pro-democracy activities. The despicable injustice against Dr.Wang has generated worldwide concern and reflects the extraordinarily high price tag the Chinese Communist regime has placed on him. We urge all justice-minded people in the world to be concerned with the fate of Dr. Wang Bingzhang and push for his release.
